#waybackwednesday, 10-24 month old Kasper, around 2012 😃 I wanted to quickly talk about #separationanxiety. SA is SUCH a complicated condition in dogs, & one that usually takes several months or years to 'fix'. The most common 'cure' for SA is usually touted as being increased exercise...there is such a strong idea that 'if you tire your dog enough they won't have the energy to get anxious', or that dogs with SA just have lazy owners who don't exercise them mentally/physically. So I just wanted to quickly say that in the majority of SA cases exercise plays a very minor part, & with some dogs increased exercise can actually increase their SA. To put it in human terms, you wouldn't say that someone who'd exercised all day would be too tired to have an anxiety/panic attack, because that's just not how it works 😉 What does work for SA is preventing the dog experiencing the trigger (usually being left home alone) whilst verrrry slowly counter conditioning them to it. Kasper had SA when we adopted him (hence the adorable baby photos, it all ties in! 😃), he had it moderately bad in that if we shut him away from us in the house he would whine/howl, & if we left him home alone he would bark, whine & destroy stuff. He once chewed halfway through a door 😳 It took us about 4 months to gradually build up to the point where he was happy being left home alone for 30mins, & within 6 months he was happily left for 4hrs. We found a crate was EXTREMELY helpful in combating his SA (to the point where he still loves his crate 6yrs later 😂) but for most dogs with SA, crates probably won't be helpful due to issues with confinement. The most important thing about SA: know your dog + take the training at their pace!! 😉
When he’s happy my heart is full of the most powerful energy❤️
Swipe to see the behind the scenes from this picture! It was pretty scary to take it because the ladder was damaged from the storms recently & moved and cracked every time I took a step😂! You can see at the end I was happy to be alive after this adventure 😂.
