Look how cute!! ✨💛✨So the other day I saw another post on a fellow beekeeper's account condemning wasps, encouraging folks to kill them whenever possible, and to show them no mercy, because they are "jerks". .
I don't think I'll ever understand. When we shout "save the bees (or other species)" in one breath, but then blatantly encourage the disrespect for another species, were not doing anyone any services. It's easy to see the negative in a wasp, but as stewards of nature which are receiving a tone of the public's attention, beekeepers have a responsibility to disseminate information that is both reflexive and factual. Teaching others to loath and disrespect another insect does nothing for our "save the bee" cause. Furthermore, it encourages the public to be selective with their concern and compassion for living creatures. We all know Nature is a system which does poorly when out of balance. Wasps have purpose and we humans benefit from their existence tremendously. We need to do a better job promoting the respect for all living creatures - especially as beekeepers. NOTE, I am not referring to invasive wasp species that pose a threat to eco systems, that is an entirely different topic. I'm addressing the common wasp to Canada, shown in the video above. .
