Fynbos Friday – Athanasia trifurcata (ASTERACEAE)
Drought, you say? Kouterbos don’t mind! This super-waterwise species occurs in a range of Cape Town lowland veld types including Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, South Peninsula Granite
Fynbos and Peninsula and Swartland Shale Renosterveld. It is a shrublet to 1.5m tall with rough, waxy, grey, wedge-shaped leaves. The specific epithet ‘trifurcata’ refers to the three (usually) forks at the tips of the leaves. Clusters of bright yellow flowerheads (with 5-100 florets each) make their presence known during the late spring flowering season. Admittedly I can recall turning my nose up at it during my CREW days when common pioneers just didn’t cut it. Overlooked by snobbish botanists but never by its bee, wasp, beetle, thrip and butterfly pollinators, making it a very valuable insect forage plant for urban gardens!
Flowering time: (Sep.) Oct.-Dec.
In your garden: Plant in full sun in clay or sandy soils. Water to establish, extremely waterwise thereafter. No compost or fertiliser. Adaptable and easy to grow. Use as a filler between species with fresh green foliage, such as Salvia chamelaeagnea.
Distribution: Found growing on flats and rocky slopes from Namaqualand in the north to Port Elizabeth in the east, often colonising roadsides and other disturbed sites
Photo: taken down my garden path last week. Other species may be closing shop for the dry summer but not A. trifurcata!

#Museum30 Day 20: Botany 🌲
This post goes out to the most important plant in my life - Carl the white pine! Carl has lived at the center of the history museum ever since he was transplanted here in 1986. He's originally from Flint, MI, so he had to spend a few hours on the back of a flatbed truck, and was put into place using an 80-ton crane. Our admission desk points directly at Carl's trunk, so I've spent a lot of time getting to know him!
This weekend’s bouquet painting was SO much fun to work on. I hope you love it @shjarvie! 💕
