I have had the most humbling experience today. I bought Carolina two years ago with no intentions of training her to hunt. Just wanted a dog. Her third day home she was bringing little birds and squirrels to the front door. So I decided to force fetch her. My first time training a dog and I hated it. She hated me. Especially with the E collar. She shut down on me. The most frustrating part. I had a lot of friends that did it consistently and had great dogs. Her retrieves were great though, she had her basics down. Will heel and sit and hold the bird until you ask her to drop. Anyway, I gave her time to calm down and get a more mature mind. I really started working with her again mid summer this year. I really wanted to duck hunt her but she just doesn’t do well wet and cold. She’s hesitant jumping off things and we didn’t have properties this year that had a beach access. So I didn’t take her. I wanted her first experience to be well thought out on my end. I’ve had a feeling lately that she’s ready. I picked a day to take her when it was only two of us. No pressure and a quiet environment. This dog sat in a layout blind with me with her eyes to the sky and retrieved all 4 birds without hesitation. Brought them back and got right back in the layout. My pride is through the roof. It feels so good to see something you put time (and frustration) into and see it work! I love my girl ❤️
