These are an interesting pair ☺ I hardly ever get decent photos of them outside the nest box, but got some nice ones today. This is our pair of Mottled Owls ☺ In the wild they'd be resident to Central and South America, adapted to survive in various types of forest. They can go relatively un-noticed given that they spend so much of their time in the gloomy comfort of their nest box (which they blend in extremely well against 😋), but their patterning is beautiful when you can look closely 😍 #mottledowl#strixvirgata#owl#owlsofinstagram#birdsofprey#scottishowlcentre#raptor

Some of you have already seen this, but here's a beautiful Mottled Owl that was perched along one of our trails for several weeks. He kept his eyes tightly shut the first time I saw him, but he seemed a little more awake when I returned later in the afternoon to take his photo.
Video by @joelsartore | Mottled owls like this one photographed at the Monticello Center in Italy can be found from Mexico through Central America and in forested parts of South America. They are strictly nocturnal birds who spend the night hunting, preening, yawning, stretching, and combing their heads with their claws. To claim his territory, the male will sing in a series of short guttural hoots. Often the female will respond with a much higher, drawn-out call.
This photo shoot was made possible in collaboration with the @greenteenteam.

Many of our birds rotate from being on display to our behind the scenes areas. Our mottled owl, Siesta, is currently behind the scenes while her brand new enclosure is being built! We can't wait to finish up our (many) current construction projects.
