The super elusive Gerenuk. And officially my new spirit animal. The name means 'giraffe-necked' in the Somali language. Also, look. At. Those. Ears.
We went tracking on foot on the Il Ngewsi conservancy area after the heat had gone down a bit (it's not as elevated as Lewa). Definitely didn't expect to manage to photograph one considering how shy they are. I was at 600mm x the EOS80D's 1.6 crop factor, which says something about how far he was...he ran away just after this picture.
Il Ngwesi means 'The People of the Wildlife' in Maa (Maasai), and the conservancy is beautiful, with its red soil. It was the first 100% community conservancy to emerge in Africa, and it's celebrating its 20th bday this year. Stay tuned for a coming blog post 😊
I happen to be doing my bachelor dissertation on the Il Ngwesi model of conservation, and have interviewed some incredible people working hard to make things happen ☀️
