The Red Ball Cafe was established in 1922 in Albuquerque's historic Barelas neighborhood. It gained more noterity in 1926 when it was traversed by the original alignment of Route 66 through Albuquerque. The cafe was well-known for their 5-cent "Whimpy Burger" that featured a signature red chili sauce. It closed in 1979, and sat lifeless for 19 years until it was reopened by local entrepreneur Jim Chavez in March of 1998. Recent information indicates that the cafe closed in 2014.
