There is a tendency to boast about needing little sleep to function. Sleep deprivation (less than 7 hours per night) has been linked to multiple cancers, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and poor mental health. It ruins your mood, memory, attention, planning ability, and increases risky behaviour. Poor sleep over time can kill you.
The director of the Centre for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, Professor Walker, said: “No aspect of our biology is left unscathed by sleep deprivation." He insists that we all have a non-negotiable, eight hours of sleep every night.
“Once you know that after just one night of only 4-5 hours of sleep, your natural killer cells – the ones that attack the cancer cells that appear in your body every day – drop by 70%, how could you do anything else?”
