Research grants and contracts
Hello from @sydney_uni NHMRC research grants and contracts team!
For the next few weeks I’ll be working with my team to provide feedback on @sydney_science NHMRC project grants and early career fellowships.
NHMRC is Australia’s peak funding body, with a budget of $900 million a year. That might sound like a lot, but it is incredibly difficult to get your hands on.
To land yourself a grant or fellowship you’ll need to undergo an extremely thorough review by experts in your field. It is undeniably competitive to land a small portion of the funds available.
To make matters worse investment in NHMRC has been flat for years, and the number of projects that receive funding has been dramatically decreasing.
Only 15% of projects actually receive funding.
NHMRC is constantly making changes to try and maintain the diversity of Australian research.
But there is no denying that what we need more support and increased investment in science.
"‘Tis the season of giving and we’ve partnered with @bettersocietytoday_charity to help them reach their goal of providing 5000 meals this Christmas. Text “BetterSociety” to 501-55, or check the link in their bio. Every $1 provides 3 meals for someone in need!
Better Society Today is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that uses the power of social media to bring meaningful changes in today’s world. The organization was started by two incredibly passionate women in the Finance and Medical sector, who have pledged that 100% of the net proceeds go to feeding hungry families.

Maszlee Malik, Ph.D. (assistant professor di International Islamic University Malaysia; spesialis Gerakan dan Pemikiran Islam Politik)

🍋 SUGARED LEMONS UPDATE 🍋 First off, I misread the recipe, which was actually for sugared lemons. There is a recipe right next to it for Candied Grapefruit. Candied Lemons and Sugared Lemons are a bit different. When you “candy” lemons (or grapefruit or whatever), you boil out some of the bitterness of the peel and you eat the center. Sugared Lemons are still super sweet, but with some bitterness. Bittersweet! 😜 You mostly eat the peel. I think it is ok to eat the middle lemon part since it gets refrigerated, but that part is more bitter and dried out (because all the juice seeped down into the bottom of the jar). By the way, that long, brown, slender thingy is a Vanilla Pod! 😉 I cut up the peels, take a sprinkle of the sugar, and put it in my evening refresher. 😋 Delicious! I haven’t tried the peels in ice cream yet, but I think they would be amazing with vanilla bean ice cream for a fancy, restaurant-like-but-at-home dessert. I may try candied lemons sometime, but I actually like the idea of this recipe better! Thanks @guarnaschelli (Please correct me if I’m wrong about anything.) #sugaredlemons#lemons#science#kitchenexperiment
Measuring the very slight radioactivity in kitty litter. It's about twice what our normal background radiation is. _
If you find yourself in possession of a few bags of high-potassium commercial fertilizer, or potassium chloride water softener tablets, or po- tassium chloride ice/snow melter, or potassium-based salt substitute, or even a bowl of Brazil nuts, try getting a radiation measurement from them with your Geiger counter. It’s not difficult to get a reading that’s twice the normal background radiation. The key is the potassium: household items that are high in potassium are very slightly more radioactive than other objects. This is because elemental potassium has a naturally occurring isotope called potassium-40 (about 1 in every 8,000 atoms), which is very slightly radioactive. (We keep emphasizing very slightly so that you don’t panic at the sight of a bunch of bananas, which are high in potassium.) This very slight radioactivity is more than enough to be detected by your Geiger counter. - Environmental Monitoring with Arduino #fiestaware#solder#diy#resistor#electronics#safecast#bGeigie#arduino#geigercounter#panasia#nuclear#radiation#measure#map#activist#safety#earthquake#nuclearpower#sensor#iot@kithub#sciencefair#banana#potassium#radioactive#rock#science#fatherdaughter#diy#fun

Sunrise on Mars: Our Opportunity rover was built to last 90 sols, or Martian days. The intrepid rover has survived to see 5,000 sols of exploration and counting. A sol lasts about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day.
Here we see sunrise as a new day breaks over the Red Planet on sol 4,999, Feb. 15, 2018. This view looking across Endeavour Crater was taken with Opportunity’s Panoramic Camera (Pancam), yielding this processed, approximately true-color scene. This view combines three separate exposures taken and was processed to correct for some of the oversaturation and glare, though it still includes some artifacts from pointing a camera with a dusty lens at the Sun.
Opportunity has driven a little over 28.02 miles (45.1 km) since it landed in the Meridiani Planum region of Mars in January 2004.

Saturn’s moon Enceladus drifts before the rings and the tiny moon Pandora in this view that our Cassini spacecraft captured on Nov. 1, 2009. The entire scene is backlit by the Sun, providing striking illumination for the icy particles that make up both the rings and the jets emanating from the south pole of Enceladus.
Pandora was on the opposite side of the rings from Cassini and Enceladus when the image was taken. This view looks toward the night side on Pandora as well, which is lit by dim golden light reflected from Saturn.
