Interesting fact about Canada #4: RCMP!! One of the beloved and most well known symbols of Canada is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), they may have very distinctive uniforms but they are real police have been involved in some of Canada's high profile criminal cases. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was formed in 1920 by the merger of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police (RNWMP, founded in 1873) with the Dominion Police (founded in 1868). And from the beginning they have relied on skilled riders to carry out police duties across the Canadian Praries. The RCMP is responsible for an unusually large breadth of duties including: enforcing federal laws including, drug trafficking, border integrity, providing counter-terrorism and; protection services for the Monarch, Prime Minister, their families and residences. On May 23, 1974, RCMP Commissioner announced that the RCMP would accept applications from women as regular members of the force. This first all-female troop graduated from Depot on March 3, 1975. In the early years, to break the monotony of endless riding drills, members of the Force commonly competed amongst themselves and performed tricks on horseback. In 1876, some of these tricks and exercises were performed at Fort Macleod, Alta. This is believed to be the first public performance of what would eventually evolve into the Musical Ride. The Musical Ride performs in up to 50 communities across Canada. They help raise thousands of dollars for local charities and non-profit organizations. The riders act as ambassadors of goodwill who promote the RCMP's image throughout Canada and all over the world. #canada150#truepatriotlove#westandonguardforthee#standforcanada
