Here's why this is such a true statement - people think too small. And why do they think too small? For three reasons:
1. People who love you don't want to see you get hurt, so they encourage you to "be realistic", to get a good job, to always have a plan B, to keep your feet on the ground, etc. And these are the people that love you. Don't get me started on the people that actually want to see you fail.
2. Your brain would rather see you on the bottom and safe than on top and in danger. So it encourages you color in the lines.
3. Emotional pain registers in the physical pain centers of your brain - so it actually hurts. Since we are animal that optimizes for pleasure, it doesn't take us long to avoid reaching beyond our grasp, even if that means keeping us small.
So, if you want to do something extraordinary, you've got to be doing things that violates all three of those states - and when you do that, people are going to think you're absurd, because they're still thinking small.

Psychologist Martin Seligman did an experiment in the late 60s or early 70s where he would give dogs either an avoidable or unavoidable electric shock. What he discovered was that if the shock was avoidable the dogs would quickly learn how to avoid it and never be shocked again. If, however, the shock was unavoidable even for a short period of time the dogs developed what he called "learned helplessness". Once the shock was made avoidable in the future it was too late. The dogs had come to believe that there was nothing they could do so they stopped trying. They literally learned they were helpless and suffered through future shocks without attempting to avoid them even after they were avoidable. That's the terrifying power of invisible beliefs. People don't realize they are beliefs - they mistake them for facts. When you believe that you're capable of less than you really are you succumb to the false limitations of your invisible belief system. That's why it's important to routinely challenge your beliefs until you get to the absolute edge of human abilities.

The only thing that really matters in life is what you think about yourself when you're all by yourself. Those quiet moments when you're all alone with your thoughts will determine the quality of your life. Money can't help you there. Nothing can except being someone that you're proud of.
