For nearly 6 full days, my cousin and I did not cross paths with a single American while traveling through Belize City. Judging from some experiences I had while walking through the streets, I'd guess that most American's would not feel safe staying in the city. Desperate to find some fun on Saturday night, we drove 3 hours south to a more touristy beach town called Placencia. Our first stop was at a place called Barefoot Beach Bar where we met not just a bunch of American's, but some fellow Southern Californian's who happened to be renting a beach house just down the street. They invited us over to hang out and even offered us a place to sleep for the night; however, I noticed a little later that the coolest perk here was the straw hut sitting perfectly on top a private dock facing east in the backyard. The weather forecast predicted "mostly cloudy" at sunrise, but I refused to use that as my excuse to sleep in. An opportunity like this is far too precious to risk missing for a couple of extra Z's. Because in that moment, sitting in solitude along the Caribbean Sea, I reminded myself that I refuse to give up on my dreams and, most importantly, to not to be so damn hard on myself along the way. Just put one foot in front of the other, stay in the present moment and love as much as possible every single day. Everything else will fall into place.
Arequipa, the stepping stone to Cusco. I suggest stopping here for a day or two to acclimatize! I only stayed 1 day and was taking Diamox to avoid Altitude Sickness but still got very sick! Had to get oxygen at a clinic in Cusco and missed Rainbow Mountain. Arequipa is 2350m in altitude. Cusco is 3399m and Puno is 3810m. Rainbow mountain is 5200m!!
