Turning 30 can be quite a milestone. And 2017 marks 30 years since Foilco first opened its doors. The company has had great pleasure working closely with a host of talented creatives over the years and decided that it would be a great idea to ask some of the world’s best, to offer a few words of advice. So they posed a simple question: "If you could go back to the start of your career, what advice would you give your younger self?"
Calling upon the talents of StudioDBD, they decided to create a new book containing inspirational quotes from the likes of Astrid Stavro, Mr Bingo, Anthony Burrill, Malika Favre and Jean Jullien, which also features examples of Foilco’s range of foils and a collection of different techniques.

The children of the future always observe what you say and do. Your innermost thoughts manifest into your words and actions, and for all these things, the darkest shadows cannot conceal them from the piercing light of truth, and even the illusory armor of mirrors melts in the heat of its veracity. The children of the future always observe...and we always remember. “You are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.” - Joseph Brodsky
“Happiness equals higher vibration and therefore a powerful magnet. The higher your vibration, the more powerful your magnet becomes. When you’re working with a powerful magnet, the quicker you draw things into your life and the quicker The Law of Attraction will respond.” -Jennifer O’Neil

“The special courage it takes to experience true belonging is not just about braving the wilderness, it’s about becoming the wilderness. It’s about breaking down the walls, abandoning our ideological bunkers and living from our wild heart rather than our weary hurt. We’re going to need to intentionally be with people who are different from us. We’re going to have to sign up, join and take a seat at the table. We’re going to have to learn how to listen, have hard conversations, look for joy, share pain and be more curious than defensive, all while seeking moments of togetherness.” #BreneBrown#wisdom#practice#horizon
"The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch has had a big impact on the way I parent Avery.
Randy had pancreatic cancer and only had months to live. A university professor, Randy gave a "last lecture" about life and living your childhood dreams prior to his death. "The Last Lecture" had many profound insights and wisdom. There was one story that stood out for me.
Randy had just purchased a new car with brand new leather seats. It was a gorgeous convertible and it was his baby. He was so proud and excited with this new addition! His son was in the car and had spilt a drink all over the seats and floor of the car. His young toddler son started crying. He was scared.
He said, in that moment he had a choice.. a choice to make a big deal and react... This meant that his son would learn that material things are more important than the love Randy had for his son... Or a choice to have his son feel valued and know it was just a mistake.. it isn't a big deal and that knowing he only had a few months left to live he wanted to create magical memories with his son. He chose to let it go and tell his son, "it's just milk, this is just a car.. " . He said, he actively chose to let it go as in the grander scheme of things, it's not a big deal. It's just a car. What was more important was how his son felt. He wanted his son to know that he was loved no matter what and that a car isn't more important than their relationship.
I remember hearing this and was so moved... This piece of wisdom has inspired me in who I can be for Avery.
When we don't sweat the small stuff, we are creating space for our children to explore, to engage with the world around them, and to build their own perceptions of the world they live in.
They can see the world as a safe place.. Where they are free to make mistakes and cultivate resilience to try again. Or they can perceive the world as harsh, critical, and feel scrutinised.
Reminding myself to let go and not sweat the small stuff has allowed me to really enjoy the parenting journey. It is the access to being in awe, to being engaged in their world, and to meet Avery at his level of spirit.
